Ministry of Defence seeking 'tick box' £110,000-a-year diversity chief despite cost-saving plan to scrap tanks

THE Ministry of Defence is seeking a £110,000-a-year diversity chief, while planning to scrap tanks.

The new role has a salary higher than that of a major, colonel or brigadier.

The MoD’s advert for a director for diversity and inclusion comes as the Army is preparing for major cuts in funding owing to the impact of Covid-19.

A military source told The Sun: “This is ridiculous — and the timing could not be worse.

“You don’t win wars and protect the nation with such a job and the insane salary it comes with. It’s a total non-job. It’s to tick boxes for the PC brigade.”

Tanks could be mothballed in the Government’s foreign policy, defence and security review.

'Defence is at its best when it is diverse'

Britain has reportedly sounded out Nato partners about overhauling its military contributions to the alliance.

Challenger 2 tanks could be put in preservation — allowing them to be used in a crisis, according to reports.

But a senior defence source claimed the plans would harm Britain’s standing among allies.

The new diversity chief’s role will pay attention to ensuring the higher levels of the MoD better reflect wider society.

The MoD said: “Defence is at its best when it is diverse. We are committed to promoting an inclusive working environment that attracts the best people from a wide range of backgrounds.

“We know we have improvements to make in this area. Our recruitment efforts reflect that.”
