A newborn girl has been rescued alive from a cesspit of a public toilet in north-east China after her mother allegedly abandoned her there.
The baby was discovered by shocked residents who heard cries coming from the toilet in Jilin city. They immediately alerted emergency services as the baby’s mother was nowhere to be found.
As the opening of the cesspit was only about 20 centimeters (8 inches) wide, a taxi driver passing by volunteered himself to save the girl, saying he is skinny enough to fit through.

Video footage of the dramatic rescue in Jilin province shows firefighters attaching ropes and a gas mask onto the brave driver before carefully lowering him into the cesspool on Tuesday at about 11pm.
Once he had reached the bottom, the driver placed the baby into a large net.
After pulling the man out safely, the firemen carefully retrieved the net, revealing the tiny newborn who was covered in blood and excrement.
‘When the child was rescued, she had stopped crying,’ a witness later told Beijing Youth Daily.
‘She was completely naked and her umbilical cord was still attached,’ he said.
It was reported by China News that the infant was born in the toilet as the authorities found blood stains on the floor.

The baby was immediately taken to Yongji People’s Hospital and is now in stable condition
The brave taxi driver, later identified as 35-year-old Zhu Jingyun, was just passing by the scene.
After learning that there was a baby to be rescued, Zhu immediately volunteered to go down the narrow opening, according to the witness, who is also a taxi driver.
The baby was immediately taken to Yongji People’s Hospital and is now in stable condition.
News of the rescued baby circulated online, prompting donations from nearly 30 residents, according to the report.
They brought clothes, blankets, milk formula, nappies, wipes and hot water bottles to visit the girl in hospital.
She was transported to the Jilin Social Welfare Institute on Wednesday, where staff workers will take her to the children’s hospital for a full body checkup the next day.
The police are still investigating and searching for the child’s parents, according to the report.
