West Midlands Police swooped on Janbaz Tarin, 21, after his former partner Raneem Oudeh and her mother Khaola were stabbed to death on Monday.
The couple are understood to have shared a flat in Birmingham until earlier this month when mum-of-one Raneem went to live with her mum in Solihull.
A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "Police searching for the suspect in the double murder in Solihull have arrested a man.
"The 21-year-old was detained in Sparkhill on Thursday evening and will now be questioned by detectives on suspicion of the murders.
"Officers have been working tirelessly around the clock and have acted swiftly on any information that has come in over the last few days."
Police were called to Northdown Road at just after 12.30am on August 27, and discovered the two women, aged 22 and 49 with serious stab wounds.
Tarin is understood to work as a cashier at his dad Mastu Tarin's convenience store near the family home in Birmingham.
Last week his family told The Sun Online they have not heard from the suspect and have "no idea" where he may have fled.
