DR. ANTHONY Fauci is President Joe Biden's top adviser on the Covid-19 pandemic.
And he's no longer convinced about the disease's origins.
What did Dr. Fauci say about Covid-19?
Dr. Anthony Fauci said that he's "not convinced" that Covid-19 is a naturally occuring virus.
Fauci made the statement at an event called United Facts of America: A Festival of Fact-Checking.
While there, he was asked whether he believed the coronavirus developed naturally.
"No actually. I am not convinced about that. I think we should continue to investigate what went on in China until we continue to find out to the best of our ability what happened," he said.
"Certainly, the people who investigated it say it likely was the emergence from an animal reservoir that then infected individuals, but it could have been something else, and we need to find that out."
"So, you know, that’s the reason why I said I’m perfectly in favor of any investigation that looks into the origin of the virus."
What did Fauci previously say about Covid-19?
This reversal of opinion is very different from what Fauci previously said about Covid-19.
Back in May 2020, Fauci said there was "no scientific evidence" that Covid-19 was created in a lab.
"If you look at the evolution of the virus in bats and what's out there now, [the scientific evidence] is very, very strongly leaning toward this could not have been artificially or deliberately manipulated," he said, exclusively, to National Geographic.
"Everything about the stepwise evolution over time strongly indicates that [this virus] evolved in nature and then jumped species."
Fauci also told National Geographic that he didn't believe Covid-19 was found "in the wild," brought into a lab, and then artificially manipulated.
What do we know about the origins of Covid-19 so far?
New information about Covid-19 continues to emerge in the wake of the pandemic.
In November 2019, several researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology fell ill and had to be hospitalized.
It's not known what these researchers fell ill with, but many believe these researchers contracted Covid-19.
However, it's important to note that US intelligence does not yet know, or has not yet disclosed, what these researchers were hospitalized with.
China first reported workers having Covid-19 symptoms to WHO in December 2019, but strongly deny the assertions made in the American intelligence report.
On May 20, 2021, Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee released a report saying that there was significant evidence to suggest that Covid-19's origins are from a laboratory.
The GOP also claimed that the United States government “may have funded or collaborated” in the research that led to the release of the Covid-19 virus.
“International efforts to discover the true source of the virus, however, have been stymied by a lack of cooperation from the People’s Republic of China,” they said.
