Why divorce lawyers have been waiting for today

Therapists reveal today is one of the busiest days of the year for people seeking help with their relationship as some couples return from summer break ‘angry, disappointed and alienated’

  • September is a ‘time of losses’ that can ‘stir up feelings’, said one author

Summer over, the long haul to Christmas looming – it’s no wonder that early September sees so many of us re-evaluating our lives.

And that means today is one of the busiest days of the year for divorce lawyers and therapists seeking to help those in troubled relationships.

Consultant psychotherapist Susanna Abse, author of Tell Me The Truth About Love: 13 Tales From Couple’s Therapy, said: ‘Many people wait to seek help, hoping the holiday will sort out the issues.

‘But if you still come back angry, disappointed and alienated, many couples know that it’s time to call in the couple therapist.’

September can also be ‘a time of losses’ that ‘stir up feelings in the couple’, said Joanna Harrison, author of Five Arguments All Couples (Need To) Have: And Why The Washing Up Matters.

‘Whether that’s children going to university, or kids starting school, couples therapy might be a space where those feelings need to be processed,’ she added.

Rachel Freeman, partner at law firm Kingsley Napley in London, said couples avoid life-changing decisions before summer holidays, especially if children are involved.

‘Everything is put on hold until afterwards, leading to a spike,’ she said.

David Allison, of London-based firm Family Law in Partnership, said: ‘Cynics might say the spike in September is because couples have spent time together and realise they don’t like each other.

‘But I think it is more about people facing challenges they have been putting off.’
