John Stamos has recalled how he went home and drank an entire bottle of wine after he was arrested for driving under the influence in 2015 – and later flew to Toronto to film My Big Fat Wedding 2.
The Full House alum, 60, has opened up about his arrest and battle with alcoholism in his new memoir, If You Would Have Told Me, and has admitted that thinking back to that time in his life makes him feel ‘sick’.
During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, John revealed that he not only carried on drinking after his DUI, but also had to fly to Canada the following day to shoot the movie, claiming he has no memory of his time on set.
When asked if he thought his life was over when he got arrested in Beverly Hills, the father-of-one replied: ‘No, and that’s the problem. It was horrible, I could have killed somebody…. it just makes me sick to my stomach.

The day after his arrest, John had to fly to Toronto to film My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 alongside Rita Wilson
‘Seeing myself there in handcuffs, I was like, “That’s not the kid that my parents raised”. My parents were good and I was disrespecting my childhood because it was beautiful, everything I learnt from my parents…’
John then admitted: ‘So I went home and you know what I did? I drank another bottle of wine by myself and I realized… I forgot that the next day, they said, “You’ve got to go to Toronto, you’re in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2”.
‘I was [hammered] and I don’t remember being on that set.’
The moment he returned home his sisters and his agents were waiting with his bags packed, ready to take him to a rehab facility in Utah.
The General Hospital star, who spent 30 days as an in-patient at Cirque Lodge, said he wasn’t mad at his loved ones staging an ‘intervention’.
John said he believes his alcoholism is ‘hereditary’, claiming his parents were alcoholics ‘but they were functioning’.
He said: ‘It’s hereditary, and if you poke at it long enough… then it attacks you like a monster, and that’s what happened to me.’
Referring to his 2004 split from his first wife Rebecca Romijn, he continued: ‘But it was the combination of the divorce, and then my dad died and then it just kind of went down… and then my mom died, and I just hit rock bottom.
‘I could stop for a few days, I could stop for a week, but I would do a gig and then at the end, I would reward myself. A lot of it was I was very lonely, so I found myself… if I drank, I would be with these people that – if I was sober – I would never be with.’
During the chat with Howard, John also went into some detail about his breakup with Rebecca, 50, and said watching the Victoria’s Secret model’s career skyrocket made him feel ’emasculated’.

‘I loved her and I thought she was super talented. So I was happy to do that,’ he said of helping Rebecca launch her own acting career. ‘But I forgot about my own stuff. She was taking off and I just wasn’t paying attention to mine. And it wasn’t her fault.
‘I mean, you know, you just get wrapped up in these things. I said, “you know what? I’ve had enough fame, I’m okay. Let’s put the spotlight on her”, and I loved watching it. I think that she outgrew me.’
In his memoir, John admitted that he ‘hated’ Rebecca amid their ‘painful’ and ‘shattering’ divorce, which took place in the early 2000s after six years of marriage.
He recently expressed that it had been ‘really difficult’ to write about the divorce and to revisit the emotions that he had felt at the time.
‘In my mind back then, she was the Devil, and I just hated her,’ he said. ‘I couldn’t believe how much I hated her, and it ruined my life.’
