Cleaning pro reveals hack to make carpets smell like a dream, but trolls say she’s ruining her hoover and hurting pets | The Sun

A CLEANING pro has shared her simple formula to make sure the carpets smell incredible, but trolls say she’s made a terrible mistake.

Known as Refined Living online, the woman shared a short clip to reveal the exact steps she takes to ensure her home always looks and smells perfect.

Panning the camera onto her bed, which had white sheets and beige pillows, she wrote: “How to make your carpet smell like a dream”.

She then placed a clear cylinder on a wooden table, which had a label on it that read ‘carpet cleaner’.

The woman poured bicarbonate of soda into the jar, which she said “soaks up odour”.

She then added 20 drops of lemon essential oil, which she explained kills dust mites.

Using a long, orange straw, she mixed the two ingredients together to keep it powdery rather than it clumping up.

Taking a sieve out of the cupboard, the woman instructed viewers to “sprinkle [it] everywhere”.

After covering the carpet, she used a hoover to remove all of it as she explained: “Smells amazing!”

People were quick to comment on TikTok user @refinedliving's post as one person wrote: “Baking soda can get into the motor of your cleaner and damage it.”

To which another person replied: “That's exactly what I was going to say. And now I have a broken $400 (£329) shark vacuum. Don’t do it, not worth it.”

Another person said: “Isn’t this counter productive? Sprinkling scented oil into baking soda that soaks up and removes smell?”

While a third argued: “Be careful lemon essential oils can be harmful to our four legged friends,” followed by a dog emoji.

According to spotlessvacuum.com, baking soda can actually harm your hoover as they shared: “The small, sharp soda particles can clog filters, act like sandpaper on carpet fibres, and even break your vacuum if they make it into the motor.”

While the most common issue is that they can clog filters, if there’s damage to the filtration system then these particles can reach the motor.

“These coarse particles can damage gears, bearings, and other vital parts, which could cause permanent damage,” they added.

Not only can it be harmful to the hoover, but it can also damage the carpets in the long term. As the hoover can’t pick up every single particle, they’ll get stuck in the carpet and eventually wear it down.

Instead, they recommend using a carpet cleaner, which is specifically designed for the task and a great deal more effective than baking soda, too.

Meanwhile, it’s true that essential oils can pose a risk for dogs and other furry pets kept in the home.

According to the American Kennel Club, cinnamon, citrus, pennyroyal, peppermint, pine, sweet birch, tea tree, wintergreen and ylang ylang are all toxic, whether they’re ingested through the mouth or spread on the skin.

“If your pup can reach the essential oil you put on him and licks it off, it could result in gastrointestinal upset,” they shared.

They urged pet owners to never leave essential oils lying around and if your dog does ingest it, then you should “contact your veterinarian and poison control immediately”.
