Live-Action ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Series Scrapped at The CW

‘Powerpuff’, which is originally set to be based on the hit animated series created by Craig McCracken, was previously put back into redevelopment after its pilot was rejected.

AceShowbiz -A live-action series of “The Powerpuff Girls” has been canceled on The CW. The decision comes after “Powerpuff”, which is originally set to be based on the hit animated series created by Craig McCracken, was put back into redevelopment as its pilot was rejected.

Brad Schwartz, The CW’s President of Entertainment, confirmed the cancellation in a statement. “We’ve already given those back to the studios. So they’re free to develop those and sell them anywhere,” he said on Friday, May 19.

Prior to this, Dove Cameron (Bubbles), Chloe Bennet (Blossom), Yana Perrault (Buttercup) and Donald Faison (Professor Utonium) were announced to be cast for the live adaptation of the series, which centers on fan-favorite’s tiny crime-fighting girls struggling through their early 20s. The pilot was filmed in early 2021, but it wasn’t picked up to series.

“Sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss,” former CW president Mark Pedowitz’s regime explained to reporters in May 2021. “Tonally, it might have felt a little too campy. It didn’t feel as rooted in reality as it might have. But again, you learn things when you test things out. And in this case, we felt like, ‘Let’s take a step back and go back to the drawing board.’ “

Back in 2021, fans were left horrified after the official script for the pilot leaked online. One of the dialogues in the leaked script sees Buttercup saying, “I’m not wearing that dress anymore. It’s compulsory heterosexuality.” To that, Blossom responds, “Take it up with Dad.” Buttercup also says in another scene, “Bloss! Wake up or we’ll leak your nudes everywhere!”

Meanwhile, “The Powerpuff Girls” wasn’t the only project that was scrapped. The CW also pulled the plug on the Arrowverse offshoot “Justice U” and a female-led Zorro series “Jake Chang”.
