Throughout the Hulu dystopian series Janine Lindo (played by Madeline Brewer) faced some of the toughest challenges, it’s hard to imagine what more she could’ve gone through. Despite this, the actress opened up and revealed the ‘important’ Janine scenes that were cut from season four of The Handmaid’s Tale.
Actress Madeline Brewer was joined by the rest of the cast and the showrunners for an interview with Deadline.
When asked about how she fared during the global pandemic with lockdown she revealed she was able to bring ”that isolation and fear, the yearning for freedom I brought into Janine.”
Speaking more on her character, the actress explained: “I was so lucky to be able to explore her backstory this season and handle some really incredible topics.”
“I’m proud of the show for engaging with the topics and I’m so proud they trusted me and trusted Janine with an abortion storyline,” she disclosed.

During the episode, viewers got a glimpse into Janine’s past with a key flashback scene.
Throughout the series, it was a known fact that she had been a single mother to her son Caleb when she was a waitress.
However, what Janine was yet to find out was he had died in a car crash when she was separated from him in Gilead.
In the flashback scene, she found an abortion clinic online and when she turned up it wasn’t what it appeared to be.
Madeline made an interesting revelation and shared: “It was unfortunate that because of Covid we lost some of the really important scenes.”
She stated: “For example, we had a scene that was Janine going to the abortion clinic and being accosted by people and being harassed.”
The actress went on to say: “That happens every single day, that happens nearly every time a woman tries to get an abortion.”
“It’s an incredibly frightening, harrowing and isolating experience and we weren’t able to see it because we weren’t able to get all those people together in a space because of covid,” she added.
Although viewers didn’t get to see the extent of getting an abortion through Janine, other twisted schemes were portrayed.
Once she had entered the clinic and was in the doctor’s office she was fed harmful propaganda about abortions, false information about the procedure and its side effects.
Janine later realised it was an anti-abortion crisis centre, dressed as an abortion clinic.
So when women would go and get a procedure they were faced with fake doctors who would lie and manipulate them into keeping the unwanted pregnancies.
Madeline shared: “We had to sacrifice certain really important elements and I think what we did with it was really beautiful.
“I’m still very honoured to have told that side of the story but we lost some really good stuff due to Covid, she added.”
Sadly as she attempted to escape Gilead and getting as far as Chicago, Janine was captured and taken back to the Red Center.
Fans will have to tune in to season five to see if she will become a Handmaid again or attempt another escape.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 is available to stream on Hulu in the USA and airs Sundays on Channel 4 in the UK.
