The comic broke off from his 121-date UK arena tour to appear on Sunday at Bolton’s 390-capacity Octagon Theatre, raising £80,000.

It was his first home town gig for 20 years.

Peter, 50, who quit performing due to “unforeseen family circumstances” in December 2017, was a member of the venue’s youth theatre and he worked in the box office.

He revealed how he was “let go” for offences including telling a Coronation Street star they could not get in with white jeans.

Other misdemeanours included impersonating a council employee and telling a patron who had been rude to a colleague their water was going to be cut off.

He also explained he fell asleep watching a play while in uniform.

Peter told about his other local jobs at a branch of supermarket Netto – “got let go” – and in a video shop – “got let go”.

He added: “This is the best job. I haven’t been let go yet. It’s nice playing here because it’s nice and intimate.”

Tickets had sold out “within minutes” to the theatre’s members, patrons and subscribers.

Peter appeared in a Santa outfit for a festive-themed second half, reading a monologue about advent calendars, school nativity plays and festive parties. Fans praised him with one local, Louise Green, saying: “This was absolutely amazing.

“A good treat before Christmas.”

Octagon chief executive Roddy Gauld said Peter’s “generosity” would help to keep down ticket prices.
